Our Story
It all started the day my grandfather put the first fishing pole he had ever made into my hands, I remember barely being able to hold it upright, "An 11 foot tall ocean rod." "It was a beast of a pole and as tall as the pond was wide."
He cast it into the middle of the cement pond in a quirky little trailer park in Hemet, California (yes, it’s still there — check Google Maps). It was the first voyage in the new motorhome and the first time I had ever been fishing.
I was just three years old, barely tall enough to see over the reel, when he told me, “If you feel a hit, yank the pole back as hard as you can.” So naturally, the moment I felt a tug, I whipped that thing back with toddler-level fury — and nearly broke my grandfather’s nose. He chuckled, told me to let it sit, and tried again. But when the next tug came, I yanked again. This time, he caught the rod mid-swing like a reflex ninja and scolded, “If you keep yanking like that, you're going to lose the bait.” But when we reeled it in, there it was — a tiny bluegill flipping around on the line, the hook swallowed whole. I looked up and told him, proudly, “I want to eat it.” He was mad. I was vindicated. And that, right there, was the moment I got hooked on fishing — a little cement pond, a giant pole, and the best lesson a kid could ever ask for. The fish on the line below is much bigger than that first bluegill, but I still have the same reaction from that very first day with my grandfather when I was three.
Keep on Fishing on is my motto, In my travels I have noticed a lot of people don't fish or like to fish and this Blog might be a great knowledge hub for getting started.
